When alien pods show up around the planet in Arrival, a lingual expert named Louise, played by Amy Adams, is brought in to figure out what their language means. When David Kim’s daughter Margot goes missing in this curious thriller told entirely through screens, Vick takes on the case. Right at the end of the movie, when David discovers that Vick volunteered to take on the case, he pieces together the clues and realizes she botched the investigation on purpose to protect the perpetrator, her own son. Just like in the book, Amy Dunne is revealed to have faked her own kidnapping. She returns home and convinces the media that she managed to escape her captor, Neil Patrick Harris, and is pregnant with Nick’s child, forcing him to stay married to her.

“The Prestige” (

It’s a mysterious food that in the end, is revealed to be human. It’s become part of pop culture, but it’s a movie few people have actually watched. The Game is not one of David Fincher’s most talked about movies, but it should be. It has a fantastic, mindblowing reveal at the end when Nicholas (Michael Douglas) learns that all the craziness that he’s been through is all part of an elaborate game set up by his brother (Sean Penn). The rush for the characters and fans of the movies is intense when we learn the truth together.

A twist is something that completely changes the way we’ve been interpreting the story. Throughout the movie, we learn from Cole that ghosts don’t realize they’re dead – while that should’ve been an obvious giveaway, M. Night Shyamalan sprinkles it in there with so anime quiz many other paranormal rules that it easily slips through the net for viewers.

On a narrative level, a plot twist often changes your perspective on the entire movie, particularly when it comes at the end. Many of the best plot twists pull the rug out from under you, re-contextualizing earlier events in the film and upending your understanding of what really happened. When Andy is missing on roll call, we’ve been led to believe he’s hung himself. We’re not sure, though, and the mystery of where he is keeps us in suspense. Soon, the warden angrily throws a rock through the poster, and we hear it going further and further away. That moment is so well done that nobody who’s seen it can forget the shock of when they first saw it.

It’s pure Quentin Tarantino to reveal a twist that not only changes the movie, but history itself. He did in Inglourious Basterds with the death of Hitler and he does it again, perhaps to better effect, in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Instead of Charlie Manson and his crazy followers killing Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie), Dalton, and Booth unwittingly save her by distracting the family.

“The Visit” (

When her new psychiatrist prescribes her an experimental antidepressant, she starts sleepwalking and, in a daze, attacks her husband. While adult audiences will probably see the twist in Coco coming, having a twist in an animated children’s movie is pretty fun. While Coco wasn’t the first kids’ film with a twist, it is arguably the best. From anagnorisis to reverse chronology, great twist walks the line between feeling deserved and believable in the narrative while still shocking and surprising the viewer. It should be hinted at — but never too heavily so as to diminish its shock. While many plot twists don’t really make sense if you pull them apart logically, some of the best hold together well.

There are plot twists that completely change the tone of a movie, ones that make us profoundly sad, ones that make us look at a film in a totally different way, and ones that make us want to cheer. They’re all shocking, but the sad ones are particularly affecting. This one belongs in that category, as Tommy was just a troubled young man who wanted to change his life around. The unsettling plot twist is that Norman Bates’ co-dependent relationship with “Mother” is more bizarre than it seems.

The film stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young and Michole Briana White. The film stars Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter. Fight Club has become notorious for being a bit of a “bro” movie due to its graphic violence, sexual content and popularity with young men and specifically the incel movement. However, Fight Club has a lot to say about the nature of masculinity and, while it is more evident in the novel, homoerotic themes.

A botched getaway leads her to the rundown Bates Motel, where she meets Norman Bates, a seemingly harmless, socially awkward motel owner with a creepy interest in taxidermy. Osment, however, steals the show with a performance that’s somehow both heartbreaking and spine-chilling. Toni Collette also nails it as Cole’s frazzled but fiercely loving mother. For those who have not been living under a rock, the twist is good – real good. Shyamalan lays it all out right under your nose but distracts you just enough to miss it until it hits. How the movie progresses is less about what is happening and more about the film’s overarching theme.

David Fincher is a master of late reveals and his movie Fight Club, based on the book by Chuck Palahniuk, is no exception. Though the movie was a box office disappointment it’s since become a quintessential cult film. It’s a mindblowing moment when you put together that Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is just an alter-ego of The Narrator (Edward Norton).
